    9 +1 as well, the name "variable" causes a lot of troubles to newcommers that use `var()` to declare Python names, see for example [http://ask.sagemath.org/questions/scope:all/sort:activity-desc/tags:variable_issue/page:1/ this list of ask questions]. Instead of a generic "variable", we should use "symbol" (for SR), "name" (for Python), perhaps even "indeterminate" for polynomials.
