    65 I don't see why this should be a subalgebra (unless subalgebra just means vector subspace). Counterexamples can easily be obtained if self (e.g.) is a free Lie algbera and L is the span of a single generator. (And that's just for the case when self and L both are Lie subalgebras; but the method is probably useful in higher generality.)
