This is a better implementation of the desired functionality, but rebased against 3.0.

I'm giving my *own* patch a negative review. I don't think this is needed, and probably only incorrectly programs around an issue I had on my system. I know for a fact it will cause problems. And it's not logically argued. So I'm against it.
